How to Get Tax Identification Number (TIN) in Nigeria

To get e Tax Identification Number there are certain procedures you need to follow. The TIN is given out to individuals or businesses that have either been registered or incorporated as companies by the tax office for identification and verification. How To Apply For a Tax Identification Number (TIN)

Following Section 10, subsection 2 of the CIT Acts, amended in the 2019 Finance Acts. Banks in Nigeria have been Individuals and Corporate Organisations are mandated to get Tax Identification Numbers (TIN) before an account can be opened successfully. 

The section equally needs Banks to ensure that all accounts that are opened before this Act, must present such Tax Identification Number (TIN) information as a criterion for the continued usage of their bank accounts

This is done to link taxpayer banking and tax databases to improve tax compliance and ease of tax administration. 

How To Generate TIN for Individuals

Individuals can make their application through the JTB website using NIN or BVN (Bank Verification Number)

You can visit the nearest Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) with a Utility Bill, Valid ID (Government Approved) and a Passport Photograph. You can also check online to find out if you have an existing TIN.

To make verificat6ion of your TIN, search with your BVN or Registered Phone Number and your Date of Birth.

How To Generate TIN for Non-individuals

Corporate bodies such as (Limited Liability Companies, Incorporated Trustees, Enterprises, Cooperative Society, MDAs, Trade Association etc.) can register for TIN using the JTB website with a Certificate of Incorporation and Director’s BVN or NIN and a valid ID of Directors.

The request will be verified and approved. TIN Certificate will automatically be sent to the registered email. Alternatively, a hard copy can be picked up at the FIRS Office.

Due to system integration issues between FIRS and JTB, both individual and non-individual registration can be done using the JTB website, but will have to be done at the nearest FIRS Office for validation and proper activation for major Government Agency operations like Central Bank of Nigeria, Nigeria Customs and Standard Organisation of Nigeria.
