Origins of Halloween
Halloween originated from the Ancient Celtic holiday of Samhain (pronounced sow-in).
It was mostly observed on their new year which is celebrated on November 1. The celts are now mostly in Ireland, the United Kingdom, and northern France and they lived over 2000 years ago.
The night before their celebrated new year, they believed that the line between the living and the dead becomes thin.
All Saints’ Day
The pantheon in Rome was dedicated by Pope Boniface IV to all Christian victims on May 13 609 A.D and the feast of All Martyrs Day was set in motion in the western church.
Soon after, the celebrations was moved from May 13 to November 1 and its reach spread to honor all martyrs and saints.
By the ninth century, Christianity’s influence had spread to the Celtic nations, where it progressively mixed with and replaced all pre-Christian Celtic practices.
The church officially assigned November 2 as All Souls’ Day in 1000 A.D. as a day to remember the dead.
Today, it is generally believed that the church tried to replace the Celtic feast of the dead with a more honorable church-approved celebration.
Halloween Has a Dark Spiritual History
Some people believe that Halloween has a dark history around its celebrations.
According to research, the Celts believed that Samhain’s spiritual contact made it easy for their priestesses to say prophecies about the future
They built bonfires and offered sacrifices of animals and crops to their gods. While, villagers dressed like animals for the celebrations, wearing heads and skins.
Is Halloween an Official Holiday?
Although the day is celebrated in America, the government has not officially pronounced it an official holiday.
Halloween is still a workday, and most banks and shops are open for business despite the celebrations.
