How to Remove a Sliding Glass Door
Make sure you have all of the supplies before beginning the step-by-step process of removing a sliding glass door.
Sliding glass doors are much heavier than they appear, and moving them yourself could be hazardous. Have a friend nearby to assist you in bracing and moving the door!
Tools you’ll need:
‣ Flat-head screwdriver
‣ Phillips screwdriver
‣ Foam sheets, layers of heavy blankets or comforters
Once you’ve gathered these supplies, follow the steps below to remove your sliding glass door:
1. Clear the Work Area
Remove any furniture from the area around your sliding glass door. You’ll need at least ten feet of space around your workspace.
2. Prep the Floor
Protect your floor from chipping or cracking caused by the weight of the sliding glass door with foam sheets or thick blankets. It will also protect the door as you place it.
3. Remove the Screen Door
Carefully lift the screen door rollers off the bottom track with a flat-head screwdriver. Move the screen door to a safe location away from your work area once it has been removed.
4. Remove the Stationary Door
The stationary glass door is the component of the glass door system that does not move and is typically found behind the sliding portion. If you can’t remove the sliding portion from inside the house, you’ll have to remove the stationary portion.
This is sometimes an issue with raised flooring. Remove the threshold and unscrew the top, middle, and bottom brackets with a flat-head screwdriver.
Lift the door carefully until it is free of the tracks, then have your partner assist you in tilting it slightly to remove the door from the upper track. Gently place the stationary door on a foam sheet.

5. Remove the Sliding Glass Door
A slight indent at the bottom of the track is intended for easy removal. Slide the door until it reaches this point. Next, remove the adjustment screws by gaining access to them through the side panels at the bottom of the door.
These screws are sometimes covered in plugs, which are usually easy to remove. To pull up the rollers, loosen the adjustment screws with a Phillips screwdriver. You should now be able to lift the sliding glass door freely out of the frame and track.
You may need the Philips screwdriver again to free the door from the track. Once removed, have your partner help you tilt it and move it out of the doorway. Then, gently lay it flat on a foam sheet.
Don’t Forcefully Remove Sliding Glass Doors
If you are having difficulty with any of the steps outlined above, it is time to contact a professional. This is especially important if any part of the door is jammed.
Forcing an obstinate door may result in cracks or damage to the track or door frame. A partially removed door or unfinished project leaves an unprotected opening in your home.
